The world at your fingertips

Laura McGlone Photography

Take a trip to Morocco, India or closer to home to the beautiful Alberta countryside with Laura McGlone Photography. Laura is an Edmonton-based photographer and City Market vendor that is turning her photography into beautiful art.

What made you decide to become a photographer?

I have had a camera since I was 9, and have always loved photography. While I worked other jobs, I did photography as a hobby, giving photos to friends and making many albums of my travels and life events. I realized that this was my real passion about 10 years ago, and have been pursuing photography professionally for the past 6 years.

Where do you find inspiration for the images you photograph?

I find my inspiration from National Geographic and other amazing photographers….I study their images online and try to achieve the highest quality images I can. Travel photography really excites me. I love capturing interesting or beautiful images in exotic locations. Also, the nostalgia of the Alberta countryside is also inspiring for me. Each week, I drive around the countryside photographing things left behind, like old barns and houses, wagons, trucks, and anything I come across that I find “nostalgic”.

How do customers react to your art?

Many people say that the images are very beautiful or that I have a “great eye” for photography.  Some say that my work is too inexpensive. Others cannot imagine how I have been able to travel to so many places. I tell them that I was a teacher for many years, traveling each summer and taking photographs. I have taken many trips over the past 20 years and have created many images over that time.  I decided when I was 20 that “seeing the world” would be a main priority in my life, and have made that happen.

How has your passion for photography changed or impacted your lifestyle?

It dominates my life! I find that if I have any spare time, I spend it on photography. When I wake up in the morning, it is the first thing I want to do, so house chores get put on the back burner. I spend most of my money on camera gear and travel. I travel about 2 months per year to different countries, making images, so I cannot have a pet at home!

Is there a subject, location or image that you would love to photograph but haven’t had the chance yet?

I’d love to photograph the Northern Lights! I’d also love to go to Tibet and photograph the Buddhist monasteries and few nomadic people that still remain there. Other locations on my list are: Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, and anywhere in South America…..I’ve never anywhere on that continent.

Favorite travel destination for photography?

Sri Lanka and Burma were amazing places for photography!  India is also wonderful, as there is so much color and so many interesting and beautiful things to see and do there.

Why do you choose to sell your art at the City Market Downtown?

It’s a wonderful place to meet local people, talk to them about travel, photography, and interesting locations around Alberta. It’s also a great place to make my images available to lots of people, as so many attend the market each week. Other vendors as well as my customers have been wonderful to me. When I am not at the market, I miss it!

Do you have a memorable, unique or funny story about selling your art at the City Market Downtown?

I used to keep all of the cash I made at the market in the back pocket of my jeans. One day, around $400 fell out of my pocket in the bathroom. A wonderful woman turned the money in, and I was able to meet her and give her a photograph as a gift. I was so grateful to her!  The people who attend the City Market Downtown are a wonderful group of people, as are the vendors there. I have been met with nothing but kindness.  Thank you!
